2010 Season Preview
In 2010, the Barons look to improve on a solid 2009 campaign, where they finished the regular season 26-26, advanced to the conference tournament, and knocked off the #1 seed before being eliminated in the quarter final round of the playoffs.
The main focus of Coach Mullins this past offseason was pitching, and the 2010 Barons welcome 10 new pitchers to the rotation. Drew Parker, a highly decorated pitcher from Canada looks to lead a wonderfully talented Barons pitching staff on the mound. A Canadian Junior National Team participant, and Junior College World Series champion, Drew is a proven winner, hungry to take the mound again after sitting out last season due to arm surgery. A whole host of junior college standouts join the rotation, including St. Petersburg College teammates Ricky Rogers, and Donnie Albro, 2008 Florida Fireman of the Year Joey Delgado, Delgis Soto, a top prospect in the Florida Collegiate Summer League, hard throwing left-hander Billy Mullins, and ABAC transfer Jacob Gore.
Brewton-Parker is also anticipating the return of senior catcher Gary Stauff who missed all but 8 games last season after being hit by a pitch and breaking his arm. Gary is an offensive minded catcher that will be expected to drive in runs in the middle of the Barons lineup this season. When asked about this year's team, and the upcoming season, Stauff said, "I'm just excited to play again. I've never been hurt like that before, and watching the guys play without me last year was tough. In my five years at Brewton-Parker, this is the best team we've ever had, and I think we have a chance to compete for a conference championship this year. I can't wait for the season to start."
The Barons are also excited about transfer center fielder Robby Kuzdale. Last season, for Div. II Valdosta State, Robby hit .286 with 7 2B, 6 3B, and 6 HR. He also led the team in walks, and had 11 stolen bases. Robby looks to make a significant impact in the middle of the Brewton-Parker lineup this season, and will certainly be an asset in center field this year for the Barons.
This is a transitional season for the SSAC. Berry College remains on the schedule, but will not impact conference standings as they make the move to NCAA III, and Reinhardt University changed conferences, leaving only 8 schools competing in baseball this season. The conference will expand to 14 teams next year, and be split into Eastern and Western Divisions.
In the Preseason Coaches Poll, Brewton-Parker was picked to finish 4th this year, after being picked to finish 8th last season. Traditionally a very tough conference, the SSAC looks exceptionally tough this year, with Southern Poly (4), Lee University (5), and Auburn University Montgomery (23) all ranked nationally in the NAIA preseason poll. The Barons will get a tough test early as they travel to #7 Embry-Riddle the second weekend of the season. The 2010 campaign opens up with a double header on January 30 against Edward Waters College.
