Mike Gibbs comes from Middleburg, FL, where he was barn and raised. He has one older brother, who is an Athletic Trainer at the University of Florida. His father is retired from the U.S. Navy and is now a Sheriff in Virginia Beach, VA. Gibbs lives with his mother when he is not away at college. She is a fifth grade teacher.

At Middleburg High School, Gibbs minded the net for the varsity all four years. He made All-Conference his junior and senior year and was named Third Team All-County his senior year. MHS finished second in the class 4-A state finals in 2005.
