Brewton-Parker and Home-Schooling Families

A Natural Partnership

As more families are embracing a parenting model that includes schooling their children at home, colleges around the country are asking themselves how to respond to the phenomenon.

Brewton-Parker is no exception.  For several years, we have admitted and enrolled a small number of home-schooled students, and we've found that they tend to be a good fit for our campus.  We believe we're also a good choice for them.

Consider four reasons why Brewton-Parker can be just the place for you or your child.

1. Brewton-Parker is a small campus.  That means several things particularly important for young people not accustomed to large institutional environments.

  • Small class size means professors know their students and care about their success.
  • Small student numbers means no one gets lost in the crowd.  Every student is a valued person.
  • Small student numbers mean greater opportunity to participate in campus activities and interest groups where they not only participate in fun and informative activities, but also make new friends.
  • Small student numbers mean young people who might have gotten lost on a larger campus often rise to positions of leadership in organizations they're a part of.  Many find that they have leadership abilities they had not recognized before.

2. Brewton-Parker is a Christian college, committed to honoring Jesus Christ in all we do.  That means the values we promote are ones typically considered "family friendly."  Our expectations for behavior and character likely mirror those you've spent 18 years working to develop in your young adult. And when students need correction or re-direction, caring adults are there to speak to the issues and help them get back on track.

3. Because Brewton-Parker is in a rural environment, life moves at a slower pace with fewer outside distractions than in larger cities.  That creates an excellent learning environment.  It also allows our students to develop very close bonds.  They become more than friends - they become a family-away-from-home, supporting, encouraging, and keeping each other accountable.

4. We have very active campus ministries.  Students are encouraged through chapel, BCM worship, FCA, informal dorm groups, and other campus worship opportunities to continue to develop the spiritual disciplines basic to abound.
