Welcome To BPC's Young Writers Conference

Dr. Ruth Ellen Porter, Department Chair of Arts and Letters invites you to attend the Brewton-Parker College annual Young Writers Conference.  The conference remains an ideal event for nearby teachers to expose their students to class-guided exercises and creative writing skills.

Sign-in begins at 8:00 a.m. in the foyer of Gilder Recital Hall in the Miller Music Building.

Participating area high school students will begin their day with a welcome session at 9:00 a.m. in Gilder.  This year's speaker will be author Cynthia Reese.  Her first novel, The Baby Wait, was published in 2005; she has published three novels since then.

Beginning at 10:00 a.m. students will participate in one of six workshops; the work they complete may be submitted for prizes.  Workshops, under the direction of Arts and Letters faculty, include a variety of options - please see the Conference Schedule for a complete list.

Following the opening speaker's presentation, parents, teachers, and guests are invited to a discussioin forum, hosted by Mr. Ken Wuerzberger, Vice-president for Enrollment Services and Dr. Ruth Ellen Porter, Chair of the Division of Arts and Letters.  They will answer questions regarding the writing program at Brewton-Parker College as well as questions regarding admissions, scholarships, and so on.

At 12:00, noon, everyone breaks for lunch.

At 1:35 p.m., after lunch, and back in Gilder Hall, prizes will be awarded to the winning writers, and the concluding ceremonies will take place.

The Conference ends at 2:30 p.m.

The fee of $15.00 per student, which includes a bag lunch, may be paid with a mail-in pre-registration form available on Young Writers' main page, or simply list the names of the students and chaperones on school letterhead and mail the forms to the address below. Fees may also be paid at the sign-in table at Gilder Hall beginning at 8:00 a.m., but if you plan to pay at the door, please email the number of attendees ahead of time so we can plan for enough lunches.  The cost for lunch to non-participants is $10.00.  Young Writers tee-shirts are available for $10.00.  Cash and checks are both accepted. We do not accept credit card payments.
