Students
seeking lives and careers of accomplishment, distinction,
and personal satisfaction value the academic rigor
as well as the vital skills training in writing and research
that studying English at BPC provides. Courses in
the English department, which include courses in academic
and creative writing and in American and British
literatures, give students the opportunity to explore both literature and culture in an atmosphere of
inquiry, enthusiasm, and creativity.
Reading, critical evaluation, and written expression
establish the fundamentals of a liberal arts education. As
students benefit from the pleasures of reading great literature and of exploring the history of ideas through their own writing,
they develop the analytical and evaluative skills
that distinguish an education from mere job training. Employers
desire these skills because they realize the importance of critical thinking and effective communication in today's competitive society.
What kinds of careers do English majors prusue? Here are just a few:
* teaching
* literary scholarship
* theory
* philosophy
* law
* film
* journalism and telecommunications
* public relations
* marketing
