Sigma Tau Delta
(Sponsors the John Robert Brewer Lecture Series in Literature)
Students studying English at Brewton-Parker College have
the opportunity to join Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor
society. This organization is sponsored by Dr. Harry Bayne.
Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society,
invites into its membership students who have distinguished
themselves academically in their English coursework beyond
the 200-level survey class. Alpha Delta Beta Chapter was
established in 1994. The Chapter invites new members each
fall. Induction ceremonies have traditionally been held
on the first Saturday in December.
It annually sponsors the John Robert Brewer Lecture Series
in Literature. Named in honor of the former chair of the
Division of Humanities, the series brings to the campus
noted literary scholars and writers. These lectures are
open to the public without charge.
Chapter members have in recent years attended international
conventions in Savannah, Memphis, and St. Louis, after
having raised funds through used-book sales. Various other
social events, including an annual dinner for graduating
members, are held throughout the academic year.
Gamma Beta
Phi Gamma Beta Phi, sponsored by Dr. Don Wallace, is an honor
society and service organization. Its name is derived from
the initial letters of the Greek words for education, life,
and friendship. Students who have earned 15 or more hours
of credit and whose GPA is in the top 20 percent of their
class are invited to join. Members must maintain their
GPA in the top 30 percent to remain in good standing. The
watchwords of the society--Scholarship, Character, Service--denote
the three major objectives of Gamma Beta Phi.
- To recognize
and encourage individual excellence in education.
- To promote the development of leadership ability
and character in its members.
- To foster, disseminate, and improve education
through appropriate service projects.
First Stage Productions Those studying drama are encouraged to join First Stage
Productions, sponsored by Professor Sheri Threlkeld and
Dr. Don Wallace. The purpose of First Stage Productions
is to promote, aid, and inspire theatrical performances.
This organization is comprised of talented play makers.
Spanish
Table Students
who wish to put their skills in Spanish to use are
invited to sit in at the Spanish Table in the college
cafeteria. The Spanish Table takes place each Wednesday
during Fall and Spring Semesters from 11:15--1:15. Frequent
attendees include Dr. Ruth Ellen Porter.
Cultural Lecture & Arts
Series (CLAS Act)
Inaugurated in 1996, CLAS Act sponsors noted lecturers,
musicians, entertainers, actors, and public figures in
performance in the college's 1000-seat Saliba Chapel. Among
those who have graced our campus are the National Shakespeare
Company, Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart, novelist
Alice Walker, singer/actress Naomi Judd, National Review
founder William F. Buckley, Jr., astronaut Ken Mattingly,
human rights leader Andrew Young, humorists Jerry Clower
and Jerry Lewis, and organist Diane Bish.
Conrad-Shelby
Lecture Series
The Conrad-Shelby Lectures are a series of annual lectures
based on the Bible as Literature or Biblical Literature.
The series was begun in 1981 by Dr. and Mrs. John Wimpey
of Atlanta, Georgia, in memory of Mrs. Wimpey's parents,
Dr. C.L. Shelby and Mrs. Mary Conrad Shelby. Dr. Shelby
was a former dean of Brewton-Parker, and Mrs. Shelby was
a professor of English.
Georgia Poetry Circuit
The college's association with the Georgia Poetry Circuit,
now in its second year, allows the college to bring award-winning
poets to its campus. The readings are free and open to
the public. Professor Bill Teem coordinates the Georgia
Poetry Circuit's readings on campus.
Arts & Letters Colloquia
For many years the members
of the Arts & Letters Division have taken turns presenting
their current interests and
projects to each other in informal colloquia. Starting
this year the Division has decided to invite the attendance
as well as the participation of faculty members from other
disciplines. Students are also invited to attend. Admission
is free of charge, and refreshments are sometimes served.
