MT VERNON, GA-- Brewton-Parker College's Lady Barons are in familiar territory in the NAIA's national basketball rankings.
Brewton-Parker's women have compiled a record of 9-2 and are ranked in this week's poll as No. 23.
"We are excited about the national ranking," said Lady Barons coach Tommy Dalley, "but we feel we can climb a little higher as the season goes along because we continue to improve with each game."
The Lady Barons Tuesday relied on seniors Joy Smith and Starla Mahaffey to defeat Flagler's Lady Saints 58-55.
Smith, a forward from Wrens, Ga., led the Lady Barons scoring attack with 19 points and Mahaffey, a forward from Lawrenceville, Ga., put in 12.
This year's team is battling with hopes of returning to the season-ending NAIA national championships.
"We feel that with the strength and the commitment to win of Tommy Dalley and his players that this team, like the team that last year soared into the national rankings, will be successful throughout the 2001-2002 season," said Dr. David Smith, Brewton-Parker's president.
The Lady Barons return to action at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, when they host Allen University.
Brewton-Parker College's Lady Barons continue to play like one of the nation's top teams.
This past week the team claimed victories from Allen and Claflin universities.
The team that is ranked No. 23 in the NAIA poll last Thursday knocked off Allen University 101-42.
Brewton-Parker's women then traveled to Claflin to face a familiar opponent.
The Lady Barons basketball team Saturday faced Claflin University in a match that pitted the same teams for the third time.
Brewton-Parker defeated Claflin 57-49 and heads home with a 7-game winning streak.
"This was a really good road win," said Lady Barons coach Tommy Dalley. "It is hard to beat a team the caliber of Claflin three times in one season."
Dalley credited seniors Keisha Hilliard, a senior guard from Savannah, Ga., and Starla Mahaffey, a senior forward from Lawrenceville, Ga., with quality play that secured the Lady Barons victory.
The No. 23 Lady Barons this season are 11-2 on the season and are preparing to host Edward Waters on Dec. 15.

Brewton-Parker College's Lady Barons are at top of the GACC standing with a record of 11-2. Toya Rogers, a sophomore guard from Vidalia, Ga., has been helping the team build a 7-game winning streak.

Brewton-Parker College's Lady Barons are firing off victories and have built a 11-2 record that has earned them a national ranking. Sasha Evans, a senior forward from Lawrenceville, Ga., drives to the basket against defenders from Flager Lady Saints in the December 4 58-55 victory.
