BARON BASEBALL

The 2002 Brewton-Parker College baseball team opened on the wrong side of series sweeps.
Barons coach Chad Parker is using his first season to build a team for the future.
"We are very young," Parker said after the opening week of the spring season. "Our young guys are in the process of learning to play college ball."
Lacking experience, the team expected some early season bobbles.
"With no returning starters," he said, "we knew that there would be a lot of early season mistakes."
"We will learn from those mistakes and get better as the season goes along," said Parker.
Brewton-Parker opened the season by traveling to Daytona Beach, Fla., to face the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Eagles.
The young Barons opened the season with 3-13 and 6-16 losses.
Opening ceremonies were held Friday at the Mount Vernon campus as the Barons hosted a weekend series with Freed-Hardeman of Henderson, Tenn.
The Barons fell Friday by scores of 4-5 and 1-7 and then lost 8-12 Saturday in the series final game.
"The team has been in almost every game," Parker said. "There are signs that are positive and can be used to build the team for conference play."
After opening with a record of 0-5, the Barons hope to claim victories in upcoming action.
The team hosts Valdosta State at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6 and then hosts Claflin University for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14.

Baseball season opening pitch ceremonies were handled Friday by members of Brewton-Parker College administrative team. Throwing out first pitch during pre-game activities are, from left, Dr. Al Hopkins Jr., vice president for finance and administration; Jay Orr, vice president for college advancement; Dr. John Waters, vice president for college relations; Dr. Ron Melton, provost; and Dr. David Smith, president.

Brewton-Parker College's baseball team last week went 2-for-2.
Barons coach Chad Parker led his team to a pair of home victories over Albany State University.
The victories came by scores of 7-6 and 11-4 and pulled the team's record to 2-5. Games scheduled against Valdosta State were canceled due to rain.

Adrian Dorsey, a senior shortsop from Wheaton, Md., smacked a home run and was in the game credited with knocking in three of the Baron runs.
