CHAMPIONS OF CHARACTER

Brewton-Parker College is one of the first NAIA Champions of Character Institutions.
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics instituted the program to promote the education and development of students through athletic participation.
"The Champions of Character Institutions should be commended for the actions they are taking on their respective campuses," said Steve Baker, NAIA president. "As the NAIA expands the program to local communities where NAIA institutions are located, we will see a positive difference in the development of our children as they play sports."
Champions of Character's program focuses on emphasizing the character-building aspects of sport to NAIA student-athletes and to youth level participants. The program emphasizes five core character values: Respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship.
"The first year of the Champions of Character Initiative has brought an increased awareness to character issues in sport on our member campuses," said Rob Miller, NAIA development director. "Though the perfect environment may never happen, we believe the NAIA as a whole, and especially the recognized institutions, have taken a stand to create that positive environment where competition and character go hand-in-hand."
Dr. David Smith, Brewton-Parker's president, said that, "A Brewton-Parker education combines quality instruction with Christian character development. I'm not surprised that our fine young men and women who participate in NAIA competition are listed in the forefront of those who are learning to serve others."
All Baron and Lady Baron athletic teams have been involved in the program focused on character-development.
"The athletes and coaches at Brewton-Parker have done a good job of implementing programs focusing on the Champions of Character Initiative," said Steve Barker, Brewton-Parker's athletic director.
The program will soon expand further as coaches and administrators have been undergoing training for the establishment of a program in mentoring.
"More than 50 of our athletes will be involved in mentoring in the Montgomery County schools," Barker said.
The NAIA's 332 member institutions have for years informally utilized athletics as a character development tool, with this program providing enhanced education and awareness about the positive character-building traits afforded by sports.
