BARON BASEBALL

The 2002 Brewton-Parker College baseball team will this year have a completely different look.

Barons coach Chad Parker is using his first season to build a team for the future.

"No starters returned from 2001 team," he said, "With the Barons starting lineup featuring two seniors, five juniors, five sophomores, and fifteen freshmen."

"We are very young," said Parker, "which will cause us to make a lot of early season mistakes. As the season goes along, we will learn from those mistakes and get better. If we do that, we will have a chance to be successful late in the season and make a playoff run," said Parker.

Most of the Baron players are from within the state, several being from this area.

Local players to watch are: Sophomore pitcher Brent Kennedy of Baxley, freshmen pitcher Chip Williams of Baxley, and junior first basemen Derek James of Vidalia. Freshmen third basemen Ashley Hooks of Swainsboro, freshman pitcher Raymond Alford of Swainsboro, freshmen catcher Rhitt Womack of Swainsboro, and sophomore outfielder Roff Sasser of Metter.

Top upper classmen to watch are: Senior shortstop Adrian Dorsey of Wheaton, Md.; senior first basemen Art Wilkerson of Jonesboro; junior outfielder Denson Gleaton of Columbus; and junior second basemen Ricky Nelson of Warner Robins. Junior outfielder and pitcher Josh Clary of Jesup, junior pitcher Marc Shealy of Warner Robins, and sophomore catcher Dax Mezo of Herrin, Ill.

Top freshmen to watch are: First basemen Jody Fletcher of Carterville, LHP Craig Trent of Chattanooga, TN, and RHP Jared Waggons of Newnon.

"I would love for the community to come out and support us, we have some good athletes who are equally as good people and students," Parker said. "We want to thank the community for all of its support this year. Please come and see some exciting baseball."
