LADY BARONS NO. 23/BARONS HONORABLE MENTION
Both Brewton-Parker College's basketball teams continue to hold top NAIA national recognition.
Results of the most recent poll have the Barons receiving status as an honorable mention and have the Lady Barons ranked No. 23.
Coach Steve Barker and his team of Barons are battling through a tough Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference schedule and have posted a record of 12-7 (3-4).
This past week the team battled college teams from Reinhardt and North Georgia.
The Barons were victorious against Reinhardt's Eagles, 7-11 (2-4), by the score of 72-63. Brewton-Parker fought to overtime Saturday against North Georgia, 6-11 (1-4), but ended up on the short end of the 60-55 final score.
GACC action continues with the Barons returning to Parker Gymnasium at 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, to host Georgia Southwestern's Hurricanes who have built a record of 11-7 (4-3).
Lady Barons coach Tommy Dalley and his No. 23 team have a record of 14-6 (2-3) and are spending as much time battling injuries as they are opponents.
Tameka Oliver, a junior forward from Savannah, Ga., was out for the clash with Reinhardt due to a back injury.
Oliver each outing averages 11 points and 7 rebounds.
Reinhardt's Lady Eagles, 7-11 (1-4), took advantage of her absence and pulled off a 50-54 upset.
The Lady Barons returned Saturday to action to face North Georgia with a record of 18-1 (4-0).
Brewton-Parker's women were faced with the challenge of defending North Georgia's All-American candidates Courtney Hester and Keisha Hall, which have led the team to a No. 4 national ranking. The Lady Saints pounded away for a 47-75 victory.
The Lady Barons return to Parker Gymnasium to host rival Georgia Southwestern's Lady Canes, 6-13 (1-4), at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 28.

BARONS FALL TO SOUTHERN TECH

MOUNT VERNON, GA -- Two nationally-ranked basketball competitors battled for GACC bragging rights.
Brewton-Parker College, ranked No. 23, and Southern Polytechnic's Running Hornets, ranked No. 7, met Saturday in Parker Gymnasium for a forty minute battle.
Derrick Green, a Brewton-Parker senior guard from Macon, Ga., led the Barons scoring attack with 22. His offensive leadership led several offensive charges, but Southern Tech's record climed to 9-1 (1-0) by winning 77-60.
Barons top scorers were Akin Joseph, Maxi Rios and Hector Solano.
Joseph, a sophomore guard from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, made 11; Rios, a freshman guard from San Nicolas,
Argentiana, added 7; and Solano, a sophomore post from Miami, Fla., scored 7.
Brewton-Parker's record is 10-4 (1-1) and the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference clashes continue Monday with the team traveling to face Southern
Wesleyan.

BARONS & LADY BARONS OPEN CONFERENCE WITH WINS

MT VERNON, GA -- Brewton-Parker College's nationally ranked basketball teams stormed back from the holiday break and Thursday opened their GAC conference battles with wins.
In games played at Parker Gymnasium, the No. 19 Lady Barons defeated Shorter College Lady Hawks 58-43 and the No. 23 Barons beat Shorter's Hawks 80-60.
"We played 30 minutes of solid basketball," said Lady Barons coach Tommy Dalley. "It was a great way to start the conference schedule."
The win vaulted the Lady Barons record to 13-3 (1-0).
Tasha Anderson and Tameka Oliver scored in double-digits.
Anderson, a senior guard from Griffin, Ga., scored 17 points; and Oliver, a junior forward from Savannah, Ga., added 11.
The Lady Barons next travel to face Southern Wesleyan on Jan. 7.
The Barons win pushed their record to 10-3 (1-0).
"We have had a successful fall schedule," said Barker, "which is directly related to the work ethic of the kids. They have stayed focused."
The pre-conference schedule was aimed at preparing the team for tough conference battles.
"We knew we were going to come back from the holiday break and face tough competition," Barker said. "I feel the level of competition in the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference is among the best in the country."
Derrick Green, Jarvis Smith, Ben McGlynn and Hector Solano led the Barons scoring attack.
Green, a senior guard from Macon, Ga., had 17 points; Smith, a sophomore guard from Atlanta, Ga., added 13; McGlynn, a sophomore guard from Mooloolaba, Australia, scored 10; and Solano, a sophomore post from Miami, Fla., made 10.
The Barons return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, when they face Southern Tech, who was last year a national championship finalist.
