2006-2007 SEASON OUTLOOK

Lady Barons mix returning talent with a host of newcomers

MOUNT VERNON --  With back-to-back trips to the NAIA National Tournament, the Brewton-Parker College Lady Barons have added new talent in order to maintain their recent competitive successes.

One element fourth-year head coach Sheila Simmons hopes will remain intact is the Lady Barons' on-court success, which resulted in a 25-9 campaign last season and a very impressive 82-21 record over the three years under Coach Simmons.

"Fans should look for exciting play from the seven returning players and the addition of solid transfers and freshman talent. This combination of talent may prove to be enough for the Lady Barons to have yet another successful season," Simmons said.

Having a facility like Gillis Gymnasium in the Snooks Student Activities Center, where the Lady Barons open their 2006-07 campaign Friday, Nov. 3 against Webber International, FL in the Tip-Off Classic, might be a contributing factor to the team's success.

Last season, the Lady Barons remained in the NAIA Division I Top 25 poll all year long and the season came to an end after a dissappointing loss in NAIA National Tournament.

"We have a tremendous amount of talent, both returning and newcomers. The newcomers consist of three transfers and seven freshmen. Also, with us having a junior varsity program, the are several players that will split time on the varsity squad also. This year will be exciting and challenging."

Two seniors are ready for action.

Shawnique Johnson, a 5-10 senior forward from Nassau, Bahamas was very instrumental in the success of the Lady Barons on last season.  She was named to the SSAC All Tournament Team last season.  We look for Shawnique to have a great year.

Christina Braswell, a 5-9 senior guard from Forsyth,GA saw limited playing time last season due to a large senior class.. "She is a great shooter and works hard at all times," Simmons said. "She can open up the lane for our point guards with her ability to knock down the long-range shot."

Among the Lady Barons' newcomers are three transfers.

Division I transfer Monique Martin, a 5-11 senior guard from Thomson, GA is ready to show her tremendous athletic ability.  "Monique is as versatile as they come.  She can play every position on the floor and has the ability to score at will but can also defend and rebound extremely well, "Simmons said.

Ashauntae Bussey, a 5-4 soph. point guard is extremely quick and fits in well with our up-tempo and aggressive style of play.  "She will see valuable time at the point and shooting guard position."

Kimberky Ray, a 5-9 junior forward from Dothan, AL will give us some needed experience at the forward position.  "She is quick and brings a hard-working attitude to our team."

Other returners also look to make impacts for the Lady Barons.

Monica Hunter, a 5-10 forward from Montgomery, Ala., "brings hard work and a relentless attitude to our team," Simmons said. "She is working hard and is ready to step up."

Filita Kirkendoll, a 5-6 guard from Woodstock, will be looked upon to be a threat from the outside with her shooting ability this season, Simmons said.

Shelby Pauling, a 5-6 soph. guard from Orangeburg, SC is back and ready to pick up where she left off after having to sit out last semester.  "Shelby is a really smart point guard with lots of speed and scoring ability.  We look for her to have a great year."

Kanyatta Gatling, a 6-2 center from Griffin, GA will be expected to give us the needed presence on the inside both offensively and defensively.  "She will be instrumental in helping us be successful."

Tannisha Murray, a 5-6 guard from Statesboro, GA is very athletic.  "She has worked extremely hard to be a better defender while stepping up on the offensive end also."

Adderlie Todd, Ashley Jones, and Jennifer Williams gained valuable experience playing on the JV team last season.  Each have improved tremendously.

Freshman also look to make impacts for the Lady Barons

Brekken Tadsen, a 6-1 forward from Alpharetta, GA is a great addition to the program.  "She brings size and leadership to our team.  We are excited about Brekken and look for her to have a great career at BPC."

Candice Clark, JaToya McBride, Lataja Fairley, Doretha Stanley, and Shameillah Burks are also a part of an exciting group of freshman that are ready to step up to the challenge.

"Fans can count on the Lady Barons to play an aggressive style of defense and an exciting up-tempo style on offense," Simmons said. "The Lady Barons will compete every night and play hard."
