Brewton-Parker women’s soccer signs six new recruits

At weddings the bride is supposed to have something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.  A soccer team needs something old in the form of returning players and something new, namely recruits.  “As for something borrowed, I have been known to borrow ideas from other coaches,” said Brewton-Parker Head Soccer Coach Bill Glass, “and we will make sure that every player gets something blue since our colors are royal blue and orange.”

The Barons will return nine players from the 2006-2007 campaign and at this point have signed six freshman recruits.  Joining the Barons will be Randi Brown (Sylvania), Desirée Caton (Palm Bay, Florida), Courtney Gurley (Marietta), Mallory Lashley (Guntersville, AL), Jerneil Nivet (Maloney Gardens, Trinidad) and Lucy Razo (Acworth, GA).

“We are very pleased with the way the 2007-2008 recruiting class is shaping up,” according to Coach Glass. “These signees all bring strong credentials to the program.”

For example, Brown ended her women’s soccer high school career at Screven County High School this year as varsity co-captain and broke the school records for most goals scored in one game and most goals scored in a career.  Caton was varsity team captain of the 2006-2007 West Shore Junior/Senior High School women’s soccer team which won district championships the last three years and went to the regional semifinal this year.  Gurley played three years of varsity soccer at Sprayberry High School starting in her sophomore year when she won the MVP award.  Lashley was the starting goal keeper for the Guntersville High School varsity team for four years and was team captain her junior and senior years.   Nivet was selected to play for her country’s U-20 National Team when she was just 15 years old.  Razo played on the women’s soccer team at Etowah High School and was voted best offensive player her first three years and received the leadership award her senior year.

The Barons will play an exhibition match versus Georgia Military College at 4 p.m. on August 14 in Mount Vernon.  This would be a good opportunity to get an early look at this year’s BPC women’s soccer team as the Barons will not play another home match until September 2 when they take on Flagler College at 4 p.m. in their regular season home opener.
