Constitution of the


GEORGIA PHILOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION

(established, 2006)

 

Preamble

The Georgia Philological Association exists for the purposes of exploring and exchanging ideas within the field of philological studies.

Article One:  Name

The name of this organization shall be the Georgia Philological Association.

Article Two:  Membership

Membership shall be open to students, teachers, scholars, and creative artists in the field of philological studies.

Article Three:  Officers

The officers of this organization shall be (1) the President, (2) the Vice President, (3) the Secretary, and (4) Treasurer.

Article Four:  Meetings

The meetings shall take place annually at a site in Georgia.

Article Five:  Committees

Section 1:  Executive Committee

The Executive Committee shall be composed of eight members: the President, the Vice President, the Secretary-Treasurer, the Chairperson for Local Arrangements, the immediate past President, two at-large members, and the Editor (or Co-Editors) of the Journal of the Georgia Philological Association.

Section 2:  Nominating Committee

The Nominating Committee shall be appointed annually by the Executive Committee.

Article Six:  Amendments

Proposed amendments shall be published in the annual programme and are subject to approval by a two-thirds majority vote of the membership present at the annual meeting.

Article Seven:  Publication

The official publication of the Association shall be the Journal of the Georgia Philological Association, and the journal will be published each fall at Brewton-Parker College.


BY-LAWS

  1. Election of Officers
    1. The President and Vice President shall be elected annually.
    2. The Secretary-Treasurer shall be elected for a three-year term.
    3. Vacancies of unexpired terms shall be filled at the discretion of the Executive Committee.

  2. Duties of the Officers
    1. The President shall preside at annual meetings, call and chair Executive Committee meetings, and coordinate all activities of the organization.
    2. The Vice President’s primary duties shall be to assist in the development of the program for the annual meeting.
    3. The Secretary-Treasurer shall keep all of the records of the Executive Committee meetings and of the annual meetings, and shall maintain all procedural and financial records of the organization.

  3. The Chair for Local Arrangements shall serve as a member of the Executive Committee. This position shall be filled by a representative of the institution hosting the annual meeting.

  4. Two at-large members shall be elected to the Executive Committee from the general membership to serve two-year terms; at least one at-large member should be selected from an institution other than the host institution.

  5. The GPA Executive Committee, upon nomination, shall approve the appointment of an Editor (or Co-Editors), who shall be responsible for editing the journal. The Editor (or Co-Editors) shall serve as a voting member of the GPA Executive Committee. The Editor (or Co-Editors) shall appoint an Editorial Board who shall serve for terms established by the Editor. The Editor (or Co-Editors) may also appoint an Associate Editor and student editorial intern(s). The Editor (or Co-Editors) shall serve for a renewable term of two years.  

  6. Membership dues and registration fees shall be determined annually by the Executive Committee.

  7. All members shall be expected to publicize calls for papers and other circulars generated by the organization, and to undertake any other liaison work for the organization on their respective campuses. They should encourage colleagues to submit papers for the annual meetings. They should forward the names of possible guest speakers to the President of the organization. They should urge colleagues to join the organization or renew their memberships. They should attend business meetings at the annual meetings. They should enlist referees for evaluating papers submitted for the annual meetings.

The Georgia Philological Association acknowledges with gratitude the assistance and encouragement of Dr. David McCracken, Associate Professor of English at Coker College in Hartsville, South Carolina, the current president of the Philological Association of the Carolinas (PAC), in preparing the constitution. The PAC constitution served as a model for this document.
