Letter of Welcome from the President of the

GEORGIA PHILOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION

Harry Bayne

Words of Welcome from the President of GPA

Dear Fellow Philologists:

On Friday, 29 February, and Saturday, 1 March 2008, Brewton-Parker College will host the third annual convention of the Georgia Philological Association (GPA).  This organization-the first of its kind in this state-came into being in October 2005 when the Arts and Letters faculty at Brewton-Parker ratified a constitutional document and elected officers.  In the two years since our founding, our organization has grown in numbers and reputation, and we eagerly solicit your active participation.

The host institution in Mount Vernon sponsors sessions for the presentation of scholarly papers and panel discussions to address matters affecting our disciplines.  Participation in this convention is open to all GPA members.  We cordially invite college students (undergraduate and graduate), professors, retired teachers, and independent scholars to join.  A listing of membership levels and corresponding dues appears elsewhere on this Web site.

It is our hope that GPA will continue to flourish as a strong, worthy educational and cultural entity.  The first volume of our organization's refereed journal for the publication of selected essays read at the April 2006 convention, under the editorship of Dr. Thom Brucie, was published in January 2007, and has garnered much favorable attention.  Volume 2 of The Journal of the Georgia Philological Association, containing proceedings from the March 2007 convention, will appear in published form later this year.

Please consider the benefits of affiliating with a professional society whose meetings will always be just a short drive away.  We will endeavor as well to keep dues at reasonable levels to encourage GPA's growth.  In addition, we welcome sustaining memberships from institutions (English and Modern Language departments, liberal arts colleges, and universities) to assist us in our ongoing efforts to make GPA better and to create an endowment for its journal.

We look forward to your interest-and ideally, to your attendance-at our third annual convention, 29 February-1 March 2008, at Brewton-Parker College.  For more information, please feel free to contact me at hbayne@bpc.edu, or by calling (912) 583-3105.

Sincerely yours,

Harry M. Bayne
