Ben Caston is a graduate of William Carey College (1996) in Hattiesburg, MS, and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where he earned a Master of Music in Church Music (1998) and Doctor of Musical Arts (2005), both with an emphasis in voice. Dr. Caston has taught on the music faculty at Brewton-Parker College since August 2005.
A lyric tenor and active oratorio soloist, he recently performed Orff’s “Carmina Burana” with Georgia College and State University and Schubert’s “Mass in G” with the Hilton Head Choral Society in April 2009. He was also featured in Nelson and Farrell’s “Savior: a Modern Oratorio” with First Baptist Church Newnan, Georgia in March 2009. He will be the tenor soloist for the Gainesville Symphony Orchestra’s upcoming performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in October 2009. Other performances include Handel’s “Messiah,” Honneger’s “King David,” and Saint-Saëns’ “Christmas Oratorio.” His opera roles include Azaël in Debussy’s “The Prodigal Son,” Donald in Douglas Moore’s “Gallantry,” and the Prince in Warren Martin’s The “True Story of Cinderella.”
An ordained minister and active in music ministry since 1994, he has served Southern Baptist Churches in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Georgia. He currently serves as interim minister of music at First Baptist Church of Perry, Georgia.
Dr. Caston is an active member of the Georgia Chapter of the NATS and The Baptist Church Music Conference. In January 2007, he presented a paper based on his doctoral research at the Third Annual New Voice Educator’s Symposium sponsored by the Student NATS chapter of Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. In August 2009 he participated in the V.O.I.C.Experience program and studied voice with the legendary operatic baritone, Sherrill Milnes. Dr. Caston and his wife, Rebecca, have a son, Clay, and a daughter, Sydney, and they live in Mount Vernon, Georgia.
