Special to The Archway
Fifteen visitors ranging from upstate New York to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., visited the Montgomery County Historic Village on the campus of Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon March 30.
As part of an Elderhostel tour of local Georgia farms, this group stopped for a couple of hours to see what life was like in a settlement where there was no electricity and where a new appliance might be a rotary churn instead of the old-fashioned dasher variety.
Al Perry provided some old-time music on the porch of the Cooper-Conner cabin, while on the back porch visitors learned how to make cornhusk dolls. A demonstration on making biscuits without baking powder engaged visitors inside the house. At the Berry Thompson house, a rope bed and a miniature toy iron and pistol were draws.
The Historic Village will be open for the public to enjoy old-time hands-on crafts on Saturday, April 18, from noon till 4 p.m. For more information, please call Mary Waalkes at 583-3110, or Anice McArthur at 583-2517.
Brewton-Parker College is the only accredited four-year Christian college in south Georgia.
