By Kelley M. Arnold
Interim Director of Marketing
Virginia Appalachian writer, Brenta Blevins, will give a public reading of selected works Wednesday, April 8 in the Gates Auditorium on the Mount Vernon campus. The reading, which begins at 7 p.m., will be followed by a question and answer session. Refreshments will be served, and the event is free.
This reading is the highlight of a half-week’s worth of creative writing presentations and mentorship to two local high schools and BPC students. The week began with a visit to both Montgomery County High School in Mount Vernon and Robert Toombs Academy in Vidalia Monday. Tuesday, Blevins consulted with aspiring writers at BPC and lead a Science Fiction discussion in the Film 340 class in Gates Auditorium. Wednesday morning, Blevins lead a creative writing workshop at the college’s library.
Blevins work has been published in a variety of genres. American Public Radio produced some of her audio dramas, which have aired in the U.S., South Africa and Australia. A portion of her historical play, “Escape from Captivity: The Journey of Mary Draper Ingles”, was performed on-site at the annual Discovery Day celebration in Eggleston, Va. Her short fiction has appeared in a number of venues, most recently in “ChiZine” in a contest judged by Peter Straub and other notable writers, as well as in “Haunted Hearths and Sapphic Shades”. She won the National Space Society’s “Return to Luna” fiction competition. Her non-fiction has been printed in a number of newspapers and the web magazine “Strange Horizons”. She has worked in technical and marketing communication in the software industry for 16 years.
Brewton-Parker College is the only accredited four-year Christian college in south Georgia.
