Fireworks event Oct. 13 at BPC to raise hurricane relief
The public is invited to attend Brewton-Parker
College’s Fall Fireworks
Hurricane Relief Mission on Thursday, Oct. 13, beginning at 7 p.m. on the banks
of Jones Lake on the Brewton-Parker campus in Mount Vernon.
“The fireworks display was originally scheduled for Aug. 30 to culminate
new student orientation activities, but was postponed under the threat of Hurricane
Katrina,” said Dr. Ron Melton, Brewton-Parker’s provost and chair
of the event’s organizing committee.
“The rescheduling of the fireworks
thus became a fundraising effort for hurricane relief to aid the victims
of both Katrina and Rita.”
Proceeds raised and collected during the
event will be sent to the Georgia Baptist Convention’s Disaster Relief fund, with 100 percent of monies
designated to hurricane relief, said Dr. Charles Strickland, Brewton-Parker’s
executive to the president for Church Relations.
Brewton-Parker organizations will be selling food items and a picnic basket
auction will be conducted. A limited number of free soft drinks will be provided
by Coca-Cola of McRae.
The Baptist Student Union’s student
band will provide musical entertainment.
A love offering will be taken following the entertainment and auction, with
the fireworks scheduled to be launched beginning at approximately 8:45 p.m.
Inquiries concerning the event may be directed to Lynn Jackson in the Academic
Affairs Office at (912) 583-3239.
