Concert Choir Presents Spring Concert
BPC Concert Choir Presents
Spring Concert
The Brewton-Parker College Concert Choir
presented their annual Spring Concert this past Thursday evening, April 20
in Saliba Chapel on Brewton-Parker’s
main campus.
The concert included a wide spectrum of
choral works from the 16th century motets by Melchior Frank and Ludovico
Tommaso da Vittoria to a 20th century
arrangement of the familiar hymn “Crown Him with Many Crowns.”
At the conclusion of the concert, a special
service of worship was offered. Evensong, the name given to this particular
worship experience, follows the
traditionally English choral worship and incorporates the singing, reading
and praying of God’s Word which includes two of the New Testament canticles,
the Song of Mary (Luke 1:46-55) and the Song of Simeon (Luke 2:29-32).
“The service of choral evensong connects all that we are as a college
choir. We are learners in a liberal arts college and through this service we
learn more about the history of Christian worship through the exploration and
presentation of this ancient order of worship,” said Dr. Mark Bowdidge,
assistant professor of Music at Brewton-Parker College and conductor of the
Concert Choir. “We are also part of a Christian college and as such we
conclude our year with a service of worship offering to God the best of our
year of learning, closing out the academic year offering praise to the Master
Teacher.”
While this concert was the concluding event of the academic year for the Concert
Choir, the members of the choir will combine with the Brewton-Parker Choral
Society and the 37-piece Choral Society Orchestra to present the oratorio King
David by Arthur Honegger this Sunday, April 30 at 3:00 p.m. in Saliba Chapel.
Admission is free to this event. Call 583-3136 for more information.
