Annual faculty/staff banquet ushers in new academic year

Dr. Bill Faw

Dr. Bill Faw, psychology professor at BPC and dean of External Programs, discusses his summer trip to England.

MOUNT VERNON—Faculty and staff were treated to a complimentary Fall Faculty and Staff Banquet, sponsored by ARAMARK, the college’s dining services provider Aug. 17 in the residential restaurant. The annual banquet featured the introductions of new faculty and staff members and special presentations by two faculty members on their exciting summer excursions.

Dr. Bill Faw, a professor of psychology and dean of External Programs, shared a few highlights from his trip to England in June. While at Oxford, he made a presentation at Oxford University (Oxford, England) on alexithymia, a condition by which certain persons are unable to get in touch with their true emotional state. He added that one of his favorite parts of the 10-day trip was visiting Stonehenge on the day of the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.

Dr. Ruth Ellen Porter

Dr. Ruth Ellen Porter, chair of BPC’s Arts and Letters division, shares highlights of her visit to Virginia this summer.

Dr. Ruth Ellen Porter, Grace Lorentzsen Hyatt chair of English, had the opportunity to return to her native state of Virginia for an education institute in Ferrum, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities. To her surprise, she rediscovered just “how cold” the June evenings were in that part of the country. She joked she had to buy an end-of-the-season heavy comforter to keep warm during her stay.

New faculty and staff were introduced by their respective administrators. Joining the college for their first fall semester are the following personnel:

  • Academic Affairs: Mary Ann Birris, Jennifer Blaylock, Bobby Braddy, Camille Castorina, Evelyn Clark, Bryan Cribb, Chastity Davis, Peter Dees, Denise Morrell, George Mosley, Julie Tiu, Harry Vogel and Mary Waalkes.
  • College Advancement: Roger Byrd, Pamela Davis and Gena Hart.
  • Church Relations: Peter Anthony, Reco Dawson and Andrew Gernatt.
  • Enrollment Services: Kelley Arnold, Norma Beaird, Jeremiah Curtis, Karl Hay, Taylor Hereford, Sandra Jenkins, Carrie Myles, Carla Ostrander, Bryan Sage, Roslyn Scott and G.J. Williams.
  • President: Rep. Terry Coleman (D-Eastman)

Door prizes were compliments of the following local businesses and community partners: A Shop of My Own, Cotton Patch Inn, Fuzzies, Kattie Fowler’s Crafts, Mariam George (In Memory of Dr. C.A. George), Mount Vernon Bank, Mount Vernon Drug, Gift & Flower Shop, Steeplechase and Webster Motor Company.
BPC’s hospitality committee was responsible for decorations. The group includes Sharla Williamson, Beth Griffin, Bob Sanford, Karen Mock, Beth Taylor, Kathy Cunningham and Norma Beaird.
