Bruce stimulates discussion among BPC faculty, staff

Dr. Keith Bruce, coordinator of institutional ministries of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, based in Dallas, presented a thought-provoking interactive seminar for both the faculty and staff of Brewton-Parker College during opening activities last week. Bruce asked faculty and staff to answer several questions about BPC, chief among them being “What does it mean for a college to be academically excellent and intentionally Christian and Baptist?” Bruce compared several Texas Baptist institutions’ mission statements, hiring practices, and faith integration and expression on campus and in the classrooms to that of Brewton-Parker’s. He also encouraged faculty and staff to engage in a conversation about what it means to be both Christian/Baptist and academically challenging to the student. He praised Brewton-Parker’s mission statement and the availability of “Life Calling” counseling for interested students. He left the discussion group with the following question, encouraging smaller groups to work out an answer that applies to Brewton-Parker: “What are some of the dangers or difficulties that confront a college or university that’s trying to be both academically excellent and intentionally Christian/Baptist?”
