MOUNT VERNON—What do you get when you put 10 members of Brewton-Parker College’s faculty and staff on the basketball court, facing off against the 2006-2007 Barons Basketball Team?
The answer is more than 100 excited students cheering from the stands and over $80 raised for the college’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ (FCA) Thanksgiving dinner.
The FCA’s first Faculty-Staff Basketball Game Oct. 19 was an undeniable success, according to FCA faculty advisor Chad Parker.
“I thought the students were great. We had over 100 people in the gym and the atmosphere was a lot of fun. We really had no goal as to what kind of money we wanted to raise, but we are thrilled with the $80 we did raise,” Parker said.
The final score was Faculty-Staff, 48, and Barons, 45. The Faculty-Staff upset may have been a “surprise” for both teams.
“Obviously the Faculty-Staff team had a big advantage by only playing half court while the (Men’s) Basketball team had to play both,” Parker said. “It was still a surprise, but the Faculty-Staff team was young and energetic with some great former athletes on their team, and the (Men’s) Basketball team could have played a lot harder. I am sure they didn’t want to hurt us.”
The Faculty-Staff team consisted of baseball coaches Chad Parker, Hayne Brant, Andrew Gernatt and assistant Justin Dover; women’s basketball coaches Sheila Simmons and former Lady Baron, Tamika Drinks; Campus Minister Glenn Wallace; Intramural Director Michael Aoa; Assistant to the Dean of Students Josh Hartley and Assistant Professor of Biology, Dr. Jon Shuman.
Brewton-Parker’s FCA hosts weekly Bible studies on campus, averaging about 40 students per week.
“Anyone can come,” encourages Parker.
The money raised will be used to provide a Thanksgiving meal for all Fall Sport Athletes, including volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s soccer.
