MOUNT VERNON—Brewton-Parker College’s Baron Mascot has a new face – a completely new face.
The college’s new athletic mascot was unveiled during the Oct. 31 campus-wide chapel service in Saliba Chapel on the Mount Vernon campus. Coach Steve Barker, athletic director and head men’s basketball coach, revealed the logo to the cheers and whistles of those in attendance.
BPC's Fall athletes have already started wearing the new look on their team uniforms and gear, and the athletic department’s web pages are filled with the new Baron mascot.
Dr. David R. Smith, president of Brewton-Parker College, is proud of the new Baron and believes he will be a central source of pride for all who are affiliated with the college – both now and in the future.
“Many athletic mascots are relatively easy to picture,” Dr. Smith said. “In American society, a ‘Baron’ is more difficult because we are not very cognizant of entitled offices and royal orders. However, our Scottish ancestry is well served by this mascot and the new athletic logo depicts our concept of a warrior-baron in a manner that will represent our intercollegiate athletic teams admirably.”

A committee with representatives from the college’s administration, faculty, staff and student body, chaired by Coach Barker, began working on the new Baron mascot at the end of the 2006 Spring semester. With the help of the design services of The Joe Bosack Graphic Design Company, Inc., the new Baron was born. The new Baron began his term at Brewton-Parker at the start of the 2006 Fall semester, and replaces the last Baron design. Use of the new Baron mascot and logo is under the direction of the college’s Office of Marketing, and any use of the new mascot and logo should be supervised by Taylor Hereford, BPC director of marketing.
