BPC Softball takes two of four over weekend
Team goes 4-6 on ten-game conference road trip
MOUNT VERNON—The Brewton-Parker College softball team wrapped up a long, ten-game conference road trip by winning two of its last four games.
In a doubleheader against Brenau University March 30, the Barons (28-20, 8-12 SSAC) saw the Golden Tigers take a close game and pull away in the fifth inning – thanks to a combination of timely hits and a crucial BPC error – to win game one, 7-0. The Barons were led at the plate by Bridget Ingram, Racheal Nutter and Britney Smiley – all of whom had hits in the game.
The scenario was eerily similar in the second game, with Brenau once again blowing things open in the fifth inning with a mixture of key hits and BPC errors. Courtney Payne’s two run double in the inning wasn’t enough, as the Golden Tigers completed the doubleheader sweep, 5-2.
Wanting not to finish the road trip on a losing note, the Barons’ offense came alive March 31 against Southern Wesleyan University. Back-to-back home runs by Payne and Kelli Wilson, coupled with great defensive plays, helped BPC take the first game, 6-3.
Led once again by Payne’s two home runs and a grand slam by Wilson, the Barons’ offensive production carried over to game two as BPC completed the sweep of the Lady Warriors, 12-3. Sarah McPherson was another key offensive contributor as she delivered a pinch hit home run in the sixth inning to put the game away.
Head coach Jason Bryant was pleased with the surge in offense against Southern Wesleyan but points to his defense as an important factor in both games.
“The offense was great, but I think it was the defense that showed up to really hurt the Warrior attack,” he said. “I was really proud of the defense in these two games.”
The Barons returned home April 2 for a doubleheader against Emmanuel College. The home stand continues April 6 as BPC hosts Shorter College in a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m.
