MOUNT VERNON – Despite splitting this week’s games against Shorter College and Southern Polytechnic, the Brewton-Parker College men’s basketball team has begun to gather momentum at just the right time.
The Barons (11-18, 7-10 SSAC) have won four of their last five games and, as a result, have secured the sixth spot in the eight team Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Tournament.
The week began last Thursday with Senior Night – a chance for BPC to honor Warren Beaulah and Adam Holmes in their last home game as Barons. Beaulah turned in his best performance of the season, shooting 10-for-18 from the field, 4-for-8 from behind the arc, and was perfect at the free-throw line (10-for-10). As a result of Beaulah’s 34 point, 10 rebound game, the Barons defeated the Shorter College Hawks, 76-67.
Hoping to extend their four game winning streak, the Barons traveled to Marietta this past Saturday to face No. 21 Southern Polytechnic. BPC had to overcome a slow start – falling behind 11-1 early – and battled back to tie the game twice in the second half. In spite of the comeback, the Runnin’ Hornets slipped away, 71-56.
Beaulah was the only player in double figures for the Barons with 26 points against the Runnin’ Hornets. George Fudge had nine points, while Vidalia native Bradley Wilson notched eight points and grabbed six rebounds.
BPC closes out the regular season at Emmanuel College Feb. 24. The SSAC Tournament will be Mar. 1-3 on Lee University’s campus in Cleveland, Tenn.
