MOUNT VERNON – The Brewton-Parker College women’s basketball team picked up two key wins in the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) last week.
Led by senior guard Monique Martin (38 points) and sophomore guard Shelby Pauling (18 points), the Lady Barons (14-3, 7-3 SSAC) exploded for 52 points in the second half to pull away from Emmanuel College, 79-60, this past Saturday on the Mount Vernon campus.
Despite Emmanuel shooting better from the field (51 to 39 percent) and out-rebounding BPC for the game (46-34), the Lady Barons outscored the Lady Lions, 52-32, in the second half to earn their seventh conference victory.
“We were flat in the first half,” said head coach Sheila Simmons, “and one of the biggest areas where we didn’t capitalize was at the free throw line. Fortunately, we were able to keep it close at halftime despite getting into some early foul trouble. We came out in the second half, stepped up our intensity, and were able to make free throws. Those two areas made the difference.”
The Lady Barons’ other conference win came on the road Jan. 10 when they defeated the Shorter College Lady Hawks, 70-56.
BPC’s schedule continued this week with a non-conference matchup against Flagler College Jan. 16. The Lady Barons return to conference play Jan. 18 on the road against Columbia College. Their next home game is scheduled for Jan. 25 against No. 4 Lee University. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. All home games are played in the Gillis Gymnasium inside the Bartow and Jean Snooks Student Activities Center.
