MOUNT VERNON – Following two key conference wins against Emmanuel College and No. 9 Faulkner University, the Brewton-Parker College men’s basketball team has not been able to overcome inconsistent shooting. The Barons dropped their next two conference games, 81-61 against No. 24 Lee University Jan. 25 at home, and 70-52 against Auburn University-Montgomery (AUM) Jan. 27 in Montgomery, Ala.
In the game against Lee, the Barons (7-17, 3-9 SSAC) were led by junior George Fudge (17 points) and sophomore Jurbien Byrd (11 points). As a team, BPC shot 43 percent from the field, 31 percent from behind the arc, and 40 percent from the free throw line. The Barons were out-rebounded for the game, 45-27.
Against AUM, the Barons were led by senior Warren Beaulah (19 points) and by Byrd (13 points). BPC shot 40 percent from the field and 28 percent from the three point line for the game. The Barons did improve at the free throw line, shooting 77 percent. Rebounds were again elusive with the Senators out-rebounding BPC, 37-23.
“During the Emmanuel and Faulkner games, we were averaging scoring in the seventies and were playing good defense,” said head coach Steve Barker. “You can have the best defense in the world, but if you only average 56 points a game against Lee and AUM, it’s harder to get wins.”
The Barons are on the road Feb. 3 against Reinhardt College before returning home Feb. 8 to host Berry College. Tip-off for the Berry game is scheduled for 8 p.m. All home games are played in the Gillis Gymnasium inside the Bartow and Jean Snooks Student Activities Center.
