Baron baseball drops non-conference game at Edward Waters

JACKSONVILLE – Defensive errors, coupled with leaving five runners on base, ultimately cost the Brewton-Parker College baseball team a 5-4 non-conference loss to Edward Waters College.
“When you get on base early, the middle of the order is supposed to drive them in,” said head coach Hayne Brant. “That didn’t happen. Plus, we made too many mistakes on defense. We have to work harder at practice so that we do not make these mistakes anymore.”
The Barons (10-6, 3-3 SSAC) were led by Phillip Lee and Baker Romine – both of whom turned in 2-for-4 performances. Evan Pedrick went 1-for-3 while Jeremy Brown was 1-for-2. Lee, Josh Sasser, Phil Merrill and Kyle Smith each had an RBI.
Chance Callaway, who relieved starting pitcher Brian Stauff, picked up the loss. Callaway pitched one-third of an inning and gave up two runs (both earned) on two hits. He also walked two batters. Stauff pitched six innings and gave up three runs (all earned) on six hits. He walked four and struck out three.
BPC began a nine game home stand March 6-7 against Milligan College of Tennessee. The Barons entertain conference foe Southern Wesleyan University in a three game series March 9-10. The home stand concludes March 13 against Edward Waters.
