MOUNT VERNON—If you were looking for a job last week, Brewton-Parker College’s Gillis Gym was the place to be.
More than 20 agencies and employers participated in the Montgomery County Career Expo held at the college May 24. Potential employers attending included the Department of Children and Family Services, Child Support, law enforcement agencies, service agencies like Humana and Telamon and the Department of Labor.
Event coordinators Sandy Bunton, an administrative officer with Job Training Unlimited (JTU), and Ted Buford, a One-Stop Coordinator with Altamaha Technical College in Baxley, were pleased with the turnout Thursday and believe the expo helped more than a few find jobs.
“Ninety percent of people are unaware of the resources available to them,” said Buford. “This is one of the biggest resources for people.”
Bunton adds, “The more informal atmosphere of an expo like this takes the ‘fear factor’ out of walking through the front door of an employer’s actual workplace (and asking for an application).”
To learn more about the expo and about more information on available employment in the area, contact the local One-Stop office: Montgomery County Learning Center, 912-583-4158. The office is located at 251 Richardson St. in Mount Vernon.
One-Stop centers assist citizens with job search related services. Their offices use computer searches for open positions and their staff is available to assist with resumes.
JTU oversees the disbursement of funds and programs for the Workforce Investment Act within the Heart of Georgia Altamaha region, which includes the counties of Appling, Bleckley, Candler, Dodge, Emanuel, Evans, Jeff Davis, Johnson, Laurens, Montgomery, Tattnall, Telfair, Toombs, Treutlen, Wayne, Wilcox and Wheeler. JTU also operates On-the-Job Training, Youth Services and Individual Training Accounts.
