BPC’s Jazz Combo spices things up at spring concert

MOUNT VERNON—Brewton-Parker College’s Jazz Combo held its spring concert April 24 in the Gilder Recital Hall on the Mount Vernon campus.
Dr. Armenio Suzano, associate professor of music, directed the nine member ensemble in 10 songs, among them “Mr. Super Hip” arranged by Jamey Aebersold, “Harlem Avenue” arranged by Dave Samuels, and two arranged by Dr. Suzano himself – “Blessed Assurance” and “Brasileirinho”. The combo also performed “Paco & Dave” arranged by Paquito D’Rivera and “Latin Quarter” also arranged by Samuels.
The Jazz Combo was blessed with the talents of special guest performers Tim Quigley on bass guitar and John Weaver on marimba. Quigley is a Vidalia High School faculty member, and Weaver is a BPC adjunct faculty member. Featured BPC performers were Dr. Suzano, soprano saxophone; student Christina Trowell, first alto saxophone; student Christopher Cummings, second alto saxophone; student Jamie Sexton, tenor saxophone; student Jeremy Gore, guitar; staff member Brandon Herrington, piano; student Jonathan Lewis, drums.
