| Junior Patrick McDonald (30), a pitcher from St. Augustine, Fla., winds up to strike out one more batter Feb. 5 at home against Claflin University. |
Freshman starter Derek Webb pitched four innings and allowed one run (earned) and two hits while walking one and striking out six. Sophomore Gary White, junior Patrick McDonald and senior Colby Adkinson each pitched one inning in relief. White allowed three runs, McDonald allowed one run while walking one and striking out two, and Adkinson allowed three runs and walked one.
At the plate, the Barons were led by sophomore Jopoey Fears in a 4-for-4 performance, which included a home run, two singles, and a double. Freshman John Taylor (4-for-4), freshman Ryan Phillips (3-for-4), junior Gary Stauff (2-for-4), and senior Baker Romine (2-for-3) all contributed offensively in the win.
“We came out swinging the bats with some authority,” says Head Coach Hayne Brant, who was proud of the win and his team’s performance.
“This was a great game for our young players. Our freshman and sophomores have 15 of the 21 hits. It’s great to see our young players step up to the plate with confidence. If we can keep swinging the bats like this we will have a successful season,” he said.
