BPC hosts successful basketball team camp June 17-19
MOUNT VERNON— The Brewton-Parker College Men’s Basketball Program hosted 14 teams from Florida and Georgia at its annual team camp June 17-19 in the Gillis Gymnasium on the Mount Vernon campus.
Barons Head Basketball Coach John D. Jones said more than 160 players participated in the three-day event. Jones served as camp director, and Barons assistant coach J.J. Thatcher was co-director.
On Saturday morning, Coach Jones spoke to the campers on Jeremiah 9:23-24, which were the theme verses printed on the back of the t-shirts each camper received. The campers were challenged not to boast in money, fame, or athletic ability because these things fade. Rather, boast in knowing God through His Son Jesus Christ, said Jones.
One of the unique highlights of the camp included a Cardiac Basketball Tournament focusing on late-game situations. This tournament gave coaches the opportunity to work with their players on situations that included playing from behind, playing with a lead, and last-second plays from various spots on the court.
Several local varsity and JV teams participated in the camp including Montgomery County, Toombs County, Vidalia and Wheeler County. Montgomery County Head Coach Ryan Jackson was pleased with the level of competition.
“This event was very well organized, and I felt our team was challenged by the quality of teams present,” said Coach Jackson.
Other teams participating included Worth County (varsity, JV and freshman) Team Hallstars, FLGA Hoopsters and South Florida Flight.
Brewton-Parker College is the only accredited four year Christian college in south Georgia.
Affiliated with the Georgia Baptist Convention, BPC offers bachelor and associate degree programs at its main campus in Mount Vernon and an external location in Newnan.
