MOUNT VERNON— Brewton-Parker College Softball finished their season with a trip to the SSAC Softball Tournament and several SSAC awards for deserving student-athletes, said Coach Jason Bryant.
At the SSAC Tournament, the Barons faced a disappointing 3-11 loss in the first game against nationally-ranked Brenau University. Ashley Collins got things started with a two run homerun in the first, but Brenau tallied four runs in the bottom of the first and rolled to victory from there. Sadie Mullins added a homerun in the fifth inning but it was too little, too late for the Barons in the first game. Magen Roberts, Leighann Newberry and Marissa Brown added hits in the contest.
The Barons bounced back in the second game behind April Day on the mound, defeating Columbia College 6-3 to remain in the tournament. Heather Snyder had a two-out double that plated 2 RBIs for the Barons. Marissa Brown (of Vidalia) added a second inning two-run homerun to get the Barons going. Mullins, Ashley Wooton, Collins, Newberry and Michelle Clark added hits for the Barons.
The Barons then ran into an old foe in the SSAC, Faulkner University. With Elizabeth Poythress going for the Barons on the mound, the Barons fought their way to a 4-2 victory. The Barons were offensively led by Mullins who bombed a three-run homerun in the fourth inning. Day came on for the save and Snyder made a spectacular play in left field for the final out with bases loaded to preserve the victory. Wooton and Collins added two hits for the Barons and Kelci Leng added a hit as well.
Then the Barons met up with Brenau again, this time fighting all the way to the end with Laura Hutchins on the mound followed by Leah Bennett. However, the Lady Barons fell short 0-2 to end the season. Clark and Snyder had the only hits for the Barons in this final game. A season to remember and a great playoff run at the end.
Several Lady Barons received awards at the SSAC banquet the softball team received some awards as well. All Academic Awards were awarded to Collins, Poythress and Newberry. Brown received the NAIA Champion of Character award and was also named to the All Freshman Team. Mullins was named First Team All SSAC, and April Day was named to the Second Team All SSAC team.
Bryant added the team said good-bye to its outgoing seniors Collins, Day, Clark, Bennett and Roberts this week Graduation was held May 15 on the Mount Vernon campus.
“We wish them well, and they will be missed,” said Bryant.
