Brewton-Parker College recently received a $60,000 endowed scholarship for Christian Studies majors from Maurice and Anne Thomas of Toccoa Falls, reports Norman Winter, Vice President for College Advancement.
Maurice Thomas, 94, served Lyons First Baptist Church as its pastor from 1947-1950 and then served as pastor in Lumber City for a couple years. He said, “Brewton-Parker College caught my attention as a good school.”
“I had the opportunity to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Thomas a couple weeks ago and received much more than a check,” said Winter. “It was indeed a real blessing. When I started visiting, I was curious: just who is Maurice Thomas? He told me he was a perpetual student. Not only did he treasure the years in college and seminary, he is still learning and loving every minute of it.”
Winter shares that Mr. Thomas said, “I have been ministering to young people my whole life. With this (gift) I am giving to Brewton-Parker College, I will still be able to carry on that work.”
Mr. Thomas has written three books: “The Drovers”, “Ace of the Piney Woods” and “Pulpit Echoes”, which is at the printer, and he is currently working on his fourth. He has pastored for 46 years and taught for another 26 years.
“Both he and Mrs. Thomas (age 91) have a heart for teaching and working in the field of Special Education,” said Winter. “It is obvious they have a heart for God.”
