MOUNT VERNON— Brewton-Parker College’s Men’s Basketball Team hosted former NBA player and Duke super-star Christian Laettner Saturday, Sept. 25 at a sold-out special skills and leadership building clinic for local school kids. The clinic’s enrollment maxed at 50 kids.
“The event was a major success for our program and our community,” said Coach John D. Jones. “It was a unique opportunity to have someone of his stature here at Brewton-Parker.”

Laettner is perhaps most well-known for making one of the most memorable shots in basketball history, a 17-foot turnaround jumper with 1 second left in OT to defeat Kentucky in 1992, and advance to the Final Four. After being selected with the third pick in the draft in 1992, Laettner competed for 13 years in the NBA.
According to BPC Head Basketball Coach John D. Jones, “Laettner worked directly with clinic participants in skill instruction, developing one-on-one moves, and shooting.”
Prior to the children’s clinic in the afternoon, Laettner also worked with the Barons Basketball team in a three-hour clinic that focused on higher level techniques and concepts that he learned during his pro career.
Jones added, “Christian Laettner is an outstanding teacher of the game of basketball. I was impressed with how hard he worked with our players and our children. We have been able to develop a close relationship, and I look forward to him returning to our community in the years ahead.”
