MOUNT VERNON—The Brewton-Parker College Lady Barons Soccer team posted their first win and first shut out of the season Saturday, Sept. 18, against NCAA Division II Georgia Southwestern 3-0. The game was held at the neutral location of Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, said Lady Barons Head Coach Dan Robertson.
The Lady Barons first goal came off a “beautiful cross” from Kelsey Black (24) from the right side, said Robertson. Anallely Contreras (17) mad e a run from midfield and was able to catch up to the cross and make a diving header that went near post, past the outstretched arms of Amber Bahri, the GSW keeper.
“From there, the game opened up a little more for us,” said Robertson.
At the end of the first half, the score was BPC 1, GSW 0.
In the second half, the Lady Barons were able to move the ball around and keep possession while putting more pressure on GSW to defend their own half. The next goal for the Lady Barons came in the 73rd minute by Rebecca Carley (9) to put the game “out of reach,” said Robertson.
Black again scored in the 81st minute to put the game away, said Robertson. She struck unassisted, driving the ball past the keeper.
Lady Barons keeper Mallory Lashley had six total saves and was able to keep GSW off the scoreboard, along with the help of BPC’s back line.
The Lady Barons (1-7) play Thomas University in Thomasville, Ga., October 2 at 3 p.m. The next home games for BPC Women’s Soccer is a conference game against Shorter University October 12 at 3 p.m.
Brewton-Parker College is the only accredited four-year Christian college in South Georgia.
