MOUNT VERNON—The January 25, 2011, Chapel at Brewton-Parker College opened with Baptist Collegiate Ministries (BCM) President Andrew Tucker opening with prayer, followed by Bryan Mauldin with a scripture and singing. This week’s speaker was Pastor Bucky Kennedy of First Baptist Church of Vidalia. He described a pivotal moment in American history at a Christian college in Kentucky called Asbury College. On February 3, 1970, a movement began at the college, now known as the “Jesus Movement”. It swept the nation. Asbury College’s Chapel had lasted several hours beginning at 11 a.m. and did not end until almost two days later. Media coverage of the event contrasted with the anti-Vietnam War and Civil Rights movements’ message of the times. Kennedy read from the scripture of John, chapter 4. He explained, “God knows every single one of us and how we are and how we think, but he still wants us.” Chapel is held each Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Saliba Chapel on the Mount Vernon campus. All are welcome.
