MOUNT VERNON—The Division of Arts & Letters invites high school juniors and seniors to participate in the 10th Annual Young Writers Conference. The day-long workshop scholarship program will be held on Friday, Feb. 25.
Students will have the opportunity to compete for scholarships in the areas of creative writing, parody, poetry and prose, film, digital media and journalism. Scholarships are awarded to first and second place winners in each workshop.
“Of special note this year, we welcome Sian Jones, who will discuss editing strategies in writing and publishing,” said Arts and Letters Division Chair Dr. Ruth Ellen Porter. Jones, an alumna of the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts' ARTS Program, will deliver the plenary address.
Jones’ B.A. in English is from the University of Utah, and her MFA is from Mills College. At Mills, she was managing editor of the experimental journal, “580 Split”. She was awarded Ardella Mills prizes in both fiction and the essay, and she was first runner-up for the Amanda Davis Thesis Award. In 2006, her work was selected by Jane Smiley for inclusion in the Best New American Voices anthology. Currently, she is a Senior Technical Writer at Innovative Interfaces, Inc, while she continues work on her first novel.
Students may register independently or through their schools by contacting Dr. Thom Brucie at tbrucie@bpc.edu. More information may be found on bpc.edu.
