MOUNT VERNON – Despite the scorching South Georgia temperatures, Brewton-Parker College hosted two Fellowship of Christian Athletes sponsored camps on its Mount Vernon campus last week.
The three-day camp, held June 9 to June 11, challenged junior and high school-aged girls to increase their athletic skills and use these abilities to impact the world for Jesus Christ.
Approximately 125 students from the following counties in Georgia participated in the event: Warner Robins High School, Westminster High School, Washington-Wilkes High School, Berrien County High School, Porter High School, Douglass High School (Atlanta), Maynard Jackson High School, Vidalia High School, Cook County High School, Turner County High School, and Toombs County High School.
Head Women’s Softball Coach Jason Bryant led a softball camp, and Head Women’s Basketball Coach DeCole Shoemate, along with Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach Jana Reynolds, led the basketball camp.
A worship service held on Friday night was led by Dr. Rene Rochester, founder and president of Urban S.E.T. Inc. (Strengthening, Educating and Training), whose message was “Change your heart, change your mind, and change your actions.” During the service, eight students professed their faith in Jesus, and thirty rededicated their lives to Christ.
“Camp was great. Competition was beneficial and intense,” said Shoemate. “It was a pleasure to be able to combine competition and challenge on the basketball floor with opportunities to present the gospel and challenge campers and ourselves in our daily spiritual walk.”
Local FCA representative, Brad Lane, helped the college organize these camps. To learn more about BPC’s athletic programs, contact Athletic Director Sheila Simmons at 912-583-3184, or visit www.gobaronsgo.com.
