MOUNT VERNON— The news is out. The Brewton-Parker Athletic Department has appointed Laphelia Doss to lead the women’s basketball program. After guiding her team to consecutive Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championships as Assistant Women's Basketball coach at Austin Peay State University, Doss is ready to begin a new legacy as she takes on the Lady Barons and their quest for success. With ten years of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I and NAIA level guiding her, she is more than ready for the task.

Doss is no stranger to the SSAC, as she spent the 2007-08 campaign at Southern Polytechnic State University. There, she was recruiting coordinator, team academic coordinator, and team travel manager in addition to her on-court coaching responsibilities. The Lady Hornets posted an 18-13 overall mark, including a fifth-place 12-8 record in the Southern States Athletic Conference.

At Eastern Kentucky University, Doss achieved the best field goal percentage. She currently holds the record for the most rebounds in a single season (more than 1,000 in four years) as well as in a single game. As a coach and mentor, she strives to foster a standard of excellence for her players, both in the classroom and on the court. “I always knew I was supposed to work with young people,” says Coach Doss. “It comes natural to me. My favorite inspirational quote is ‘Anything that is not growing is dying.’”

“We are excited to have Coach Doss as part of the BPC family,” says Shelia Simmons, BPC’s Director of Athletics. “She brings a wealth of recruiting and coaching experience, and she is a great mentor to the young ladies. I believe she will take the foundation that has been laid and continue to turn it into a championship program.”

When asked about her future goals, Coach Doss replied, “Right now, my focus is on BPC women’s basketball and taking them to another level. We are learning more about ourselves and our talents, and everyone steps out of their comfort zone with a changed mindset.” Brewton-Parker College can look forward to an exciting and rewarding year with Coach Doss guiding the women’s basketball team to victory.
