Friend of BPC Completes Novel

MOUNT VERNON—Dennis Lanning, father of BPC graduate, Paul Lanning, and father-in-law to Paul’s wife, Nina, also a BPC alum, recently published a novel for his Sunday congregation titled “The Inside Out Project.”

In order to complete the 34,000-word novel, Lanning would write an 800-word chapter each week, and read it as a 5-minute segment just before his sermon.  At the end of 2012, he ended up with 40 chapters. On June 26, 2012, Lanning signed a contract with Tate Publishing. The novel is scheduled to be published in October of this year, and released in stores by September 2014.

Currently Lanning is writing chapter 14 of a projected 30-chapter book titled “Circus on the Square,” a book he worked on while attending a BPC community writing class in Spring and Fall of 2010 under the direction of Dr. Thom Brucie.

Brucie played a part in helping Lanning to improve his writing. Some of the things Lanning remembers him saying are: “Your uniqueness makes you the best. Keep writing on the next project while you wait for the publisher on your first novel. Each novel needs crisis, because crisis shows how your main character’s personality is molded…how they handle things.”

Lanning is also the former pastor of the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.
