MOUNT VERNON—At the national meeting of the American Chemical Society on April 7-11, 2013, Dr. Chris Jones will give an oral presentation entitled Integration of Faith And Chemistry: Mission Field “Solutions.”  Dr. Jones grew up in Lexington, N.C. and graduated from Central Davidson Senior High School in 1986.  He is currently an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon, Ga.

When asked about the upcoming talk, Jones had this to say:

“Brewton-Parker College has a strong Faith and Learning Statement.  From this statement we are challenged to integrate faith and learning without reservation in the classroom since it is key to our efforts.  This merger of faith and learning is seen among our faculty in many ways.  In English classes students are asked to rewrite one of the Psalms in their own words.  In psychology, sin is identified as the root for some psychological disorders.  Our course, Business Ethics is cross-listed with Christian Ethics since the subject is approached with a Christian worldview.

“This year in general chemistry I revamped my entire set of lectures on aqueous chemistry which is a fancy way of saying ‘water and the stuff that dissolves in it.’  I presented the entire topic in the context of water quality on the mission field.  This new approach covered the same scientific material as before.  It took the same amount of time to deliver, and it provided a Christian context relevant to students.  As an added bonus, BPC Mathematics Professor Forrest Rich gave an inspiring talk to my students on the work his son did on the mission field for Samaritan’s Purse, assisting areas of Pakistan and Cambodia install water filtration systems and new wells.  Unlike in previous semesters, my students stayed engaged through the entire unit even though the class was at 8 a.m. four days a week.  All of the students in the class had either gone on a mission trip or knew a friend or family member who had done so.  They had a personal connection to what was being discussed.  A survey at the end of the semester indicated that almost all of the students enjoyed the topic being presented in this real context.

“There are a couple of common criticisms made on how faith and learning are integrated in the classroom.  The connection between faith and the academic subject is often said to be weak, or it takes too much class time to make the connection.  The process of integration is said to sometimes force you to omit some key elements normally covered.  However, the contextual approach used this semester seemed quite natural, covered the scientific aspects normally covered, and did it in the same amount of time.  With these concerns addressed and Brewton-Parker’s Faith and Learning Statement supported in the classroom, I decided to share these ideas with my chemistry colleagues at the upcoming national meeting.  I look forward to the conference in New Orleans where I will have a chance for my peers to evaluate this work.”
