Dr. Don Wallace |
MOUNT VERNON— Dr. Don Wallace, Professor of Communication at Brewton-Parker College, recently spoke to a Youth Leadership Class sponsored by the Toombs-Montgomery Chamber of Commerce. The program selects students who have demonstrated leadership qualities and helps give them a head start on becoming better leaders. Wallace offered an interactive presentation on “Nonfluencies – ums, uhs, you knows, likes - and their effect on credibility.” Wallace’s presentation was highly entertaining, engaging, and received well by students.
Julie R. Cook, Loan Officer at Ameris Bank, who invited Wallace to the event, stated “Don Wallace was a huge hit with our youth leadership group and with the adults who participated as well. The kids gave him an A+ for his presentation with comments such as ‘Loved the interaction – Am going to be much more conscience of how I speak to other people’ – ‘I am going to try and eliminate “um” from my conversations’ – ‘Fun, entertaining as well as educational’ – ‘I would have loved a longer session.’ ” Tameika Jackson, one of the student participants, wrote, “We learned that these are things that can affect our credibility when speaking. It makes us seem as if we don't know what we are talking about and that we aren't prepared. It helped me to see some of the things I needed to work on before going into a job interview or making a presentation.”
Wallace has also provided leadership training and seminars in Parliamentary Procedure to chapters of Gamma Beta Phi, an academic honor society with chapters throughout the U. S. In addition, he has conducted seminars in communication related topics to conferences of business organizations in Seattle, Wash., New Orleans, La., Honolulu, Hawaii, Louisville, Ky., Biloxi, Miss., and many others. He has been invited to speak to the joint seminar for the National Society of Insurance Premium Auditors and the Insurance Auditors Association of the South East in May of 2013 in Delray Beach, Fla.
