For almost 14 years, Brewton-Parker professor Christopher Jones has taught a variety of chemistry courses in the Science department, courses including chemistry for non-science majors, general chemistry, organic chemistry, and analytical chemistry. Dr. Jones is known for his focus on multi-media driven presentations, animations and videos, not to mention small group discussions and practical demonstrations relevant to the laws of chemistry. Recently, Professor Jones led a Science Fair for the campus and community.

On March 7, 2014, Dr. Jones will deliver a paper at Union University’s 2014 “Christianity in the Academy Conference.” The annual conference is sponsored by and held in the Stephen Olford Center of Union University. I had a chance to briefly speak to Dr. Jones about his contribution to the forum and asked him about the topic on which his paper would focus. “If I were to sum it up,” he said, “I’d say my paper focuses on how one might integrate faith and learning when no seminary training is present.” He went on to confess that many in his field of expertise are at times afraid to consult with others in their respective departments, “especially if those departments are theology and biblical studies.” According to Dr. Jones, his experience leads him to think an unhealthy relationship too often exists between experts in biblical revelation and natural scientists. “Sometimes men and women in my field teach down the corridor or even across the hall from someone in the biblical studies arena but mysteriously fear talking to them about how the laws of science they teach every semester blends with biblical truth.”

Dr. Jones hopes his paper will spawn discussion on developing a biblical worldview lifestyle amongst experts across every discipline in the academy. “Integrating faith and learning is what sets the Christian academy apart from secular institutions” the Brewton-Parker maintains.
