Two Brewton-Parker College front-liners leap to block a shot
from Paine College during the teams' dual Thursday, Sept. 5, at BPC's Parker
Gymnasium in Mount Vernon. The Lady Barons were victors in three straight games
in their home-opening match. |
Brewton-Parker College volleyball coach Jason Bryant began
last week hoping his Lady Barons would be sporting a 6-1 record by week's end.
After Brewton-Parker scored a 3-0 sweep Friday night
against Voorhees College in a nonconference match in Denmark, S.C., Bryant had
his wish become reality.
The three-game sweep was the second in as many nights for
the Lady Barons, who turned the trick Thursday night in their home opener
against Paine College in Mount Vernon.
For the week, Brewton-Parker lost just one game in three
matches, that coming in its 3-1 win Sept. 3 at Toccoa Falls College.
"We passed well and we played well," Bryant said
of the Lady Barons' win over Voorhees. "We didn't play with the same
intensity we played with (Thursday) night, but we still played well enough to
win in three."
Bryant credited solid passing and digging as strong factors
Thursday night in Brewton-Parker's three-game sweep of Paine.
A spirited crowd at Parker Gymnasium cheered the Lady
Barons to a 30-22, 30-20, 30-26 straight-game victory to give Bryant easily his
best start in four seasons at Brewton-Parker.
"We're getting more confident, and winning boosts
confidence," Bryant said.
"Our difference tonight was our passing. We played
well, we hit well and a big thing was we weren't intimidated. Right now we
believe we can beat anybody, and time will tell if we can."
The Lady Barons were to begin a run of four dual matches in
eight days, all on the road, Tuesday night when they traveled to Augusta to face
the Paine Lady Lions again.
Brewton-Parker then opens Georgia-Alabama-Carolina
Conference action Friday night with a 7 p.m. match at Faulkner University in
Montgomery, Ala.
The Lady Barons then play at Talladega (Ala.) College in a
nonconference match at 1 p.m. Brewton-Parker then travels to Orangeburg, S.C.,
on Tuesday to play Claflin College at 6 p.m.
The Lady Barons' next home date is Oct. 1, when they hope
to be the first Brewton-Parker team to play in the college's new Student
Activities Center.
