Brewton-Parker College vs Southern Wesleyan University
The Brewton-Parker College volleyball team may
have come out on the short end of a five-game match Friday night at Southern
Wesleyan University, but the Lady Barons may have been victorious by taking on a
tough foe after being dealt several adverse situations along the way to Central,
S.C.
Brewton-Parker coach Jason Bryant said the Lady Barons were caught in a traffic
jam in Atlanta Friday afternoon and thus decided to forgo their prematch meal
plans. Then another traffic jam resulted in Brewton-Parker's arrival at Southern
Wesleyan delayed until about 7:30 p.m., when the match was to begin at 7 p.m.
The teams, playing on SWU's volleyball homecoming, then battled to a fifth game
before the Lady Warriors (17-14 overall) prevailed to remain undefeated (6-0) in
the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference race.
But Bryant was more than praising of the Lady Barons (27-9 overall, 1-4 GACC)
for all they faced on the trip.
"I can't say enough about the heart and character of these girls," Bryant said.
"It was their homecoming, it was wall-to-wall people, we hadn't eaten anything
and spent seven hours on the road, and we still came close.
"We may not have a shot in the regular-season conference race, but we have a
shot in the conference tournament."
The GACC postseason tournament is Nov. 14-16 at Montgomery, Ala.
Earlier last week, on Oct. 22, several marks in the Lady Barons' record-setting
season kept climbing because of their 3-0 victory over Wesleyan College in
Macon.
The Lady Barons won their record sixth consecutive match and scored their 20th
3-0 sweep of the season -- and their fourth such win over Wesleyan.
Brewton-Parker's school-record number of victories grew to 27.
All the Lady Barons' action for this week was Monday and Tuesday at the
Brewton-Parker Student Activities Center. After playing Spelman College in a
nonconference match Monday, Brewton-Parker entertained Faulkner (Ala.)
University in a conference match Tuesday night.
The Lady Barons will be off until their home finale on Tuesday, Nov. 5, a 7 p.m.
match against GACC foe Georgia Southwestern State University. BPC completes
regular-season action Nov. 8 with a 7 p.m. conference match at Brenau University
in Gainesville.
