Lady Barons split GACC doubleheader
Brewton-Parker College softball coach Jason Bryant's alertness to the weekend
weather forecast saved the Lady Barons' conference-opening doubleheader when he
and Emmanuel College's coach moved Saturday's games to Friday.
The teams split the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference twin bill, with
Brewton-Parker senior Lyndsay Gomme pitching a two-hit shutout in leading the
Lady Barons to a 6-0 win in the opener.
Emmanuel scored early in the second game and held on for a 3-2 win to earn the
split.
"We played well and got off to a great start," Bryant said of the first game.
"We rode Lyndsay's pitching. She did a great job." Gomme improved to 3-1 after
the win.
The sun that gave way to rain on Saturday hindered both teams in the second
game, with Emmanuel scoring two runs when an outfielder lost the ball in the
sun.
"It cost us a couple of runs. We couldn't see the ball, but it happened to them
too," Bryant said. "Kelly Hamilton (3-2) took the loss but she pitched a
tremendous game."
Offensively, freshman April Meeks went 4-for-4 on the day and drew two walks to
get on base all six times.
The Lady Barons took an 11-3 record into their Tuesday doubleheader at Voorhees
College in Denmark, S.C.
The Lady Barons then travel to Franklin Springs on Thursday to play Emmanuel in
another GACC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
"We need to go up there and sweep them if we are going to come out of the gate
quickly in the conference," Bryant said.
Brewton-Parker then will be off until a March 14 trip to Montgomery, Ala., to
play Faulkner University.
