Lady Barons sweep way to 10-0 start
Brewton-Parker College swept Albany State University on the softball field for
the second time in eight days Thursday to increase the Lady Barons'
season-opening win streak to 10 games.
The Lady Barons rode sophomore pitcher Aislyn MacLeod's two-hitter and senior
Kendra Sewell's two hits to a 3-1 victory in the opener, while junior Kelly
Hamilton tossed a three-hitter in an 8-0, five-inning win in the nightcap.
In the opener, junior Jaime Murrant's two-run single in the sixth inning
provided the winning margin and lifted MacLeod to 2-0 on the season.
In the second game, sophomore Amanda San U's sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning
provided the Lady Barons with their eighth run and enough to end the game early
after Hamilton (3-0) completed one more shutout inning.
On Monday, the Lady Barons teed off against Agnes Scott College with six home
runs in sweeping the non-conference doubleheader 18-1 and 4-1 in Decatur.
Freshman Ashley Todd led the Lady Barons' home run derby -- after Brewton-Parker
went through the 2002 season without even one homer -- with two round-trippers,
and senior Ali Furgala had a grand slam in the onslaught.
Murrant, senior Alissa Vogt and freshman Rachel Harper also had home runs.
Harper (1-0) pitched for the win in the opener and sophomore Ashleigh Marr (1-0)
took the victory in Game 2.
After Saturday's doubleheader at home against Agnes Scott, The Lady Barons will
travel to Thomasville to play Thomas University, the No. 11 team in the NAIA
preseason ratings, in a 2 p.m. twin bill Monday.
Brewton-Parker's opener of Georgia-Alabama-Carolina conference play is Saturday,
March 1, at home against Emmanuel College beginning at 2 p.m.
