Barons take 2 of 3 from Warriors
The Brewton-Parker College baseball team won two of three
Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference games in a series Friday and Saturday
against Southern Wesleyan University in Central, S.C.
After scoring a 12-1 victory in Friday's series opener, the Barons were dealt a
4-1 setback Saturday before taking the series with a 6-4 win over the Warriors.
Brewton-Parker (13-5 overall, 4-3 GACC) took command of Friday's game with four
runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth.
Sophomore right-handers Andrew Gernatt (3-0) and Zane Miller combined on a
five-hitter. Gernatt allowed two hits and no runs with two strikeouts over four
innings to get his second win of the week.
Freshman Justin Dover was 3-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored to
pace the Barons offensively. Senior Ricky Nelson was 2-for-3 at the plate with
three runs batted in and two runs score, while sophomore Johnny King went
2-for-5 with a double and three runs scored and junior Jason Halstead was
2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.
Southern Wesleyan evened the series in Saturday's first game by allowing
Brewton-Parker just four hits while making the most of its three hits. Sophomore
left-hander Trae Wiggins (1-4) took the loss with three runs allowed (one
earned) and two hits in five innings.
The Barons rebounded in the final game in a big way, with senior Denson
Gleaton's three-run home run, his fourth round-tripper, in the top of the first
giving Brewton-Parker a quick lead.
The Barons scored two more in the second and withstood a three-run Warrior rally
in the sixth to claim the win.
Sophomore Rex Harrison was 2-for-4 offensively with one RBI and three runs
scored, and junior Miles Zachary had two hits.
Junior right-hander Brent Kennedy (5-0) won his second decision of the week by
allowing the Warriors two hits and one earned run in 4-1/3 innings with three
strikeouts and six walks.
Freshman right-hander Brandon Whitener and sophomore Ashley Hooks threw for
1-1/3 innings each, with Hooks getting his sixth save after allowing one run and
no hits.
The Barons began this week with a make-up doubleheader Tuesday against North
Georgia College and State University, which was postponed from March 1.
Brewton-Parker plays host to GACC foe Southern Polytechnic State University in a
conference series this weekend, beginning Friday with a 6 p.m. single game and
continuing Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
Next week's schedule begins with a 5 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday, March 19, at
Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville followed by a 3 p.m. game
March 20 at Augusta State University.
